Transition from "lean” natural gas to "rich" natural gas

The Netherlands has decided to reduce its exports of lean gas, to completely stop them in 2030. This gas from the Netherlands will then be replaced by "rich" gas (gas that contains more energy for the same volume).

What are the consequences for you?

This change means that you must have your gas installations checked to make sure they will work properly and safely after the conversion. In fact, your gas installations may not work optimally after conversion, for example:

  • it produces more CO,
  • it consumes more gas, or
  • it deteriorates faster.

Installations dating 1978 and before are rarely compatible with rich gas, and will need to be replaced. A new boiler is quickly profitable and can help reduce its gas consumption by up to 25%.

Which devices / installations are we talking about?

The conversion to rich gas concerns exclusively natural gas, not appliances running on bottled gas (propane, butane) or gas-powered vehicles (LPG, CNG). 

In companies, facilities that run on natural gas are most often:

  • heating appliances: boilers, furnaces, air heaters, radiating tubes, heat pumps
  • hot water production equipment
  • professional cooking appliances: cooktops, fryers, grills, woks, roasters, etc.
  • washing machines or drying machines (tumble dryers)
  • industrial thermal applications
  • cogeneration equipment for the production of heat and electricity

What impact will this have on your invoice? Will it increase or decrease?

The conversion has no effect on your invoice. 

With similar energy consumption, the transition from lean gas to rich gas will have no impact on the amount of your invoice.
